Having a Good Social Network Is an Essential for Small Businesses

Any small business today needs a good social network. Having a good social network is like having an army of non-paid employees willing to recommend your business whenever they are asked "do you know who..." and of course, they will be only too willing to recommend your business. This word of mouth (WOM) is advertising that simply can't be bought.

So how do you get a good social network?
Social networking is one of those activities that many small business owners 'put off' because they see it as having a good time. Which it is if it's done right; it has benefits that no other form of advertising will do for you in that it provides the WOM marketing that all small businesses need.

A good social network is set-up by being part of your business community. Not only limiting yourself to the business sector in your community but by also getting involved and active in your local sports clubs and any other social and fund raising events happening in your town.

We don't have time to go into all of these potential opportunities in this short article so we will stick to covering two.

Starting your Business community social network:

There is no room here for shyness and there's no room for bragging. Being shy will not get you the attention that you need to socialize properly. Bragging about all your accomplishments is likely to get you ostracized.

If you allow your shyness to interfere with your meeting new people, it will not get you invited to the next Rotary Meeting or Small Business Association meeting. If you prefer Lion's clubs to Rotary, the same principle of being seen to be a willing volunteer on their activity rosters and for their club community services will be required. Yes, you will need to spend time 'out' of your business and for some small business owners or sole proprietors this can be a problem if there is no-one else who can work for you for the few hours needed.

If this is the case, then be seen to be a potential office bearer (if asked); so that you can do your community service work after-hours. There is one thing these service clubs are never short of and that is doing good work in their communities. There is always some way to help and if you appear willing, they need you.

Social Networking through a Sports Club:

Many small business owners don't get enough physical exercise so if you need some, then playing your favourite sport will be an enjoyable way to social network for you.

Even if you are not a sports orientated person, they are always looking for sponsorships or trophy's to cover their sporting events. This is another good way of gaining a loyal social network that will be both enjoyable and profitable.

Social networking is a learned skill and is easy to adopt.
